Hi,
It depends on your symptoms and age.
Three of the most common causes include infection, benign hyperplasia and cancer.
Increase levels of PSA may be due to inflammation of the prostate, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), an infection of the urinary tract with or without irritation, medical procedures involving bladder or urethra, age health conditions, certain medical conditions and sexual activity. Also cancer of the prostate can cause elevation of the PSA. Consult your urologist for any test that needs to be done. Thank you.
Better question for your Urologist. There are benigh and infectious causes, but high PSAs are also associated with prostate cancer.
Prostate enlargement, inflammation, and other transient factors that are not understood can cause elevated PSA. There is a test called PHI that also measures types of PSA more strongly associated with cancer. Depending on that it may be worthwhile having a biopsy.
Still, almost 40% of biopsies are benign. Best not to worry until your urologist says you should have a biopsy and it comes back positive. Even then, if it’s low grade you may be just fine for 20+ years. If not, it’s probably best to treat early and fairly aggressively if you have a longer life expectancy
