Your question is too generic. There are multiple causes for chronic ankle pain and it all depends on your history and the diagnosis. Depending on those factors the problem can be "fixed" or the problem can be controlled. I would recommend that you seek consultation with a Board Certified Podiatric Surgeon who is Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
Chronic ankle pain can be caused by multiple reasons that can be ligament damage minor cartilage damage or significant arthritis. The treatment depends on the findings could be simple as using a permanent brace to repairing the ligaments or even replacing the ankle joint altogether with an ankle replacement.
Ankle painis primarily derived from fascia strain in the joint space around the ankle,medial/lateral/posterior heel, sometimes involving the anterior dorsum of foot(top of the foot). It does not come from injuries to muscles (there is nomuscle around the joint), ligaments or Achilles tendon (they are rarely everinjured) except for traumatic fracture or dislocation. The strained/wrinkled fasciatissue causes severe sharp pain upon movements. To relieve/cure pain, it mustbe loosened and smoothened. The most effective way is to initiate self-healingby light touch, i.e., Touch-and-Hold of The precision Method.Other treatments are not satisfactory, such as medications (oral, injection),hot/cold remedy, massage, manipulation, stretching, strengthening, etc. Anklebrace or elastic support is used only to avoid pain by limiting movements. Depending on what caused your pain, there are several options you have to help alleviate your ankle pain. First and foremost, did you have recent trauma to your ankle and does it warrant going to urgent care to obtain xrays and evaluation for fracture? If it is chronic ankle pain(more than 2 weeks), you can go a more holistic approach and start acupuncture treatments and even consider doing some physical therapy to strengthen the muscles, tendons and ligaments around tge ankle joint. Acupuncture will help soothe inflammation, speed up healing by bringing blood flow to the area. Elevate your ankle if there is swelling. Use ice or heat, pain balms (Biofreeze, etc). Hi there, Ankle pain can be so stubborn because we're constantly using it and it gets no rest. I find dry needling and acupuncture with electrical stimulation have been a game changer for my patients. If you're outside of California, please look for a physical therapist who can do dry needling. If you're in California, find an acupuncturist who is certified in dry needling.
Acupuncture can help and rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the ligaments supporting the ankle. A full assessment of the ankle and history of injury would be needed to properly treat.
