Cardiologist Questions Cardiologist

What is a interatrial communication?

I started to go to a cardiologist because my doctor heard a heart murmur. I also have palpitations, I have had these for some time now but they have gotten more frequent. My heart will hold for a beat and then beat forcefully. When I get them, there is like a bunch in a row. I also feel pressure in my chest occasionally. I got these results on my echocardiogram:

• Resting echocardiogram images obtained in sinus rhythm.
• LV ejection fraction appears normal with a range of 60-65%.
• Saline bubble contrast demonstrates interatrial communication with Valsalva maneuver.
• Estimated RV Systolic Pressure = 24 mmHg.

First, what does this mean? Can you explain these results to me?

As a fetus there is a communication between the L. and R atrium which closes and seals shortly after birth. At times is doesn’t seal but remains closed because the L. sided pressure is higher than the R. side pressure. Valsava increases R sided pressure and may as in your case briefly open that connection. It’s not dangerous, no need to worry.

When we are born there is a hole between the right and left atrium the two higher chambers of the heart). Most of the time this hole closes by itself. However, if the hole remains open, you can have a special device to be placed through the groin to close off the hole (it’s a day surgery procedure).
These findings are normal. It does not say anything abnormal noted in your tests. You do have a small degree of arrhythmia. You should check your electrolytes in the blood and also check your thyroid function please go to your physician are your cardiologist to evaluate your condition and more detail.
