What is causing my back pain?

I have been having upper right back pain around under my shoulder blade since December now. It was unnoticeable at first but then became worse and worse since then. It is really sharp pain when I move my shoulder back or move a certain way. I have tried following those upper back stretches, and since then the feeling has gotten way more painful than before. It also hurts in the spot when I take a deep breath. I also had a heavy backpack for school and don’t have the best posture, and I am pretty sure that this wasn’t caused by an injury, although a bit under a month before December I lifted up a heavy bookshelf with my dad (that had all the books on it) and I sort of felt like a pop in my back, it did hurt but I still lifted it up the second time, that could have affected my back maybe. I don’t know if this is related, but during this pain, for a week it felt like something in my neck was popping (it was sudden and very painful), and for the past week, my lower back has been aching.

The upper back pain sounds exactly like a rib displacement. The ribs are secondary breathing muscles so when they hurt with breathing that is the key to the right diagnosis. Stretching doesn't work because they are not tight they are displaced. They require compression. 99/100 rib displacements are posterior and stretching increases the displacement. Get to a local chiropractor. The rib itself should only require 1-3 visits.

It is hard to say exactly what it might be based on the information you gave me, but I would recommend that you make an appointment to see an orthopedic surgeon so that they can evaluate your neck and back and order the appropriate diagnostic studies like x-rays and MRI if appropriate. If it has been hurting for several weeks and has not gotten better, you should have it formally evaluated.
I’m sorry you are in so much pain. You need an examination to figure out what is wrong. I think that you should see a chiropractor.
From what you described, you very well may have injured yourself by incorrectly picking up a heavy book bag. The fact that you felt and heard a “pop” in your Neck, further indicates that you threw your Neck out of alignment which decreases the mobility of that spinal joint in your Neck. It has been there for months now and is not yet better. Therefore, I recommend that you see a Doctor of Chiropractic help you get out of pain and restore this joint to normal alignment and motion. I would be happy to help.
Could be a nerve pinch from the neck or scapular nerve. Heavy backpack and poor posture could be factors. Need back muscle strength and a lighter backpack. If no help sees an orthopedic surgeon.
It sounds as if you may have a misaligned rib at the Costovertebral joint of one of your upper ribs in your back. Manipulation of those joints could be very helpful. Find a good Chiropractor in your area and get an exam to properly diagnose your issue and get some effective treatment.
I hope it helps. Take care and be well.
