What is the cause of a sharp pain on left side of the chest while breathing?

I am having a sharp pain in the left side of my chest every time I inhale deep. What could this be?

It could be as benign as may be musculoskeletal or bad news such as pulmonary embolism or pericarditis. Please see the doctor
Most textbooks will tell you that acute chest pain associated with sweating tachycardia and drop in blood pressure will need to be investigated in the emergency room as soon as possible.

Pain on the left side of the chest when you breathe could be due to inflammation of pleura (covering of the lungs), a condition called pleurisy. We need to rule out other things that can cause left side chest pain, and for that, a physical examination is important.
What is your age? Did it begin suddenly? Progressively? Are there any other symptoms or URI? In young people, inflammation of the mediastinal pleura can produce discomfort or pain when aspirating. Look for an M.D. to take a good history, physical exam, and do some testing to find the origin of the pain. It could be a serious problem.
