Pulmonologist Questions Mucus

Concern over Bloody sputum

Hello, I have been experiencing some odd symptoms that have been worrying me. I have had these symptoms before, but recently returned stronger after starting an Antibiotic for UTI called Nitrofurantoin.

This started to occur about two months back, where there would be instances of spitting out mucus with streaks of blood. It's usually accompanied with dull chest pain. Had blood streaks when clearing out mucus before, like 2-3 times before but it's always been just a little. This time around it was a lot where I sputum in my spit with blood covering it.

Nitrofurantoin is a good antibiotic to prevent urinary tract infections, but it can cause a rare complication damaging the lungs. You need to stop the nitrofurantoin immediately and work with your physician to find another way to prevent the UTI’s. Most of the time the inflamed lungs will improve over time by just stopping the medication.
I am a pediatric lung specialist. You need an adult pulmonologist. Bloody sputum is concerning. Please see your PCP and a pulmonologist ASAP. You will need labs, imaging and probably bronchoscopy done.
