What is the surgery for an anal prolapse?

I am a 56 year old female. I want to know what is the surgery for an anal prolapse?

Hi, Dr Willkomm here. The answer to your question depends on if you have prolapsing hemorrhoids or a prolapsed rectum. It would require an evaluation by a surgeon to determine what your diagnosis is. Generally speaking, prolapsing hemorrhoids are more easily treated and can be cured with simple outpatient surgery.
Well, there are two different operations for this: one is at the anal level and the redundant tissue is removed and the remaining rectum is joined back to the anus. The other is through the abdomen where the colon and rectum are pulled back into position and a piece of material in placed behind the rectum that causes it to scar into place or the extra tissue is removed and the rectum is held in place because the colon is shorter. These both work well.
