Lidocaine or local anesthesia is used to numb the skin and muscle tissue down to the kidney. Generally a small amount of IV anesthesia and anxiety medicines are given just to help ease any mild discomfort and anxiety. In general, patients are not put to sleep.
Patients usually get just local anesthesia with lidocaine injected at the biopsy site. Some physicians also give something systemically to relax the patient.
Local anesthesia using lidocaine. Sometimes the radiologist will give iv medication to relax , but usually just local anesthetic
Usually, kids need to be in deep sedation/conscious sedation, but occasionally general anesthesia is required as well. Adults can have a renal biopsy with just local anesthesia only.
