There are many kinds of ankle surgeries and many kinds of anesthetics given for these procedures, including regional anesthesia (ankle blocks; popliteal, femoral, and sciatic nerve blocks; spinal anesthesia; epidural anesthesia; combined spinal-epidural anesthesia) and general anesthesia. The choice depends on your preference, your surgeon's preference, and the preference of your anesthesiologist.
Several options. General, spinal, peripheral nerve blocks, or local anesthesia are possible.
Usually general anesthesia +/- popliteal nerve block
