The first thing they would do would be to evaluate symptoms, referred to as lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), Poor or intermittent urine stream. Symptoms include straining to pee, sudden urge to urinate, waking up many times at night to pee, urinary frequency, incomplete emptying. Medications such as alpha blockers, 5 alpha reductase inhibitors, or phosphodiesterase inhibitors. If these fail there are surgeries to decrease the size of the prostate.
Before you go to the urologist,which your Primary care should be referring you to your primary care physician should find out your symptoms try none surgical modalities. In my professional career, I only referred to urologist for cancer and for procedure
