Dermapathologist Questions Dermapathologist

Why am I so itchy over the last few days?

I have had severe itching for the last few days. I am an alcoholic (five a day). I have not had a drink for about a week. I feel like bugs are walking on me, especially in the hair down my back. Its a very light tickly feeling but several times a day I feel like I get bit, it feels like a needle being jabbed and I get a welt that only lasts for a few minutes. I do not have health insurance yet. I just moved here on March 1st. I’m homeless with a roof over my head living in a hotel. I have not seen one bug or anything. I’ve been taking Benadryl and cool baths. I have little red dots where I got bit. The tickly feeling constantly and feel like I’m going crazy!

Your itching may be caused by alcohol withdrawal, medication side effects, or skin irritation.

Possible Causes:
Alcohol withdrawal – Can cause tingling, itching, or "bugs crawling" sensation.
Medication reaction – Some drugs like gabapentin and Zoloft may cause skin issues.
Dry skin/allergy – Cool baths and Benadryl help, suggesting irritation.
Nerve issues – Conditions like neuropathy can cause similar symptoms.
What to Do:
Stay hydrated & moisturize to help with dry skin.
Check medications for side effects.
Seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
