Neurologist Questions Neurologist

Why do I lose use of my right hand?

Please help! In August I woke up in the morning and could not use my right hand. I had no pain or numbness, I just couldn’t lift my wrist or open my hand completely. I never lost strength in my hand and could grip and squeeze. After about a month it went away and my hand was normal again. Now about 3 days ago I’m have the same issue in my left hand. Again no pain however this time I do have slight pins and needles on the top of my thumb. Again I have strength and grip just can’t raise my wrist or my fingers! Kinda getting freaked out as to why this is happening. If anyone had this and got a diagnosis please fill me in.

My suggestion is that you consider first seeing a neurologist for an examination and possible nerve study, called an EMG.
Your symptoms suggest that your sleep position is resulting in your compressing a nerve in your arm during sleep, possibly the Radial Nerve, which is prone to a compression injury in the upper and outer area of the upper arm. To avoid this, make sure that your position for sleep doesn’t result in this area being pressed on. Other possible causes are mini strokes, but these would occur randomly and not just upon awakening. They also tend to be much briefer than you describe.
