Why was my mammogram so painful?

I had a mammogram yesterday. It was very painful. Is it okay to feel pain during a mammogram?

Depends on the skill set of the technologist. I have always taught my techs to watch the patients facial reaction when turning the knob to compress the breast while consistently asking the patient if it’s alright to continue to squeeze the breast tissue further as the mammography machine will not take an exposure unless the minimum compression requirement is not met.

Giving the patient control over the process allows better compression.

You may try taking an over the counter pain killer 45 - 60 minutes prior to and after your mammogram to alleviate the symptoms before and after as some women are very sensitive to pain.
Yes, it is common to feel some discomfort or pain during a mammogram due to the breast compression involved in the procedure. However, if the pain is severe or significantly more intense than previous experiences, it's a good idea to consult your healthcare provider. To learn more, connect with me at drjeromepuryear.com.
