“Is anesthesia safe for my 87 year old mother?”
My mother has to have surgery, and she is 87 years old. Is it safe to go under anesthesia at her age?

The answer is yes with a question mark. The outcome is patient specific depending upon the health of the patient, the type of surgery required, and the surgery history. Best to get a anesthesiologists opinion who will be taking care of your mom.
Yes. Octogenarians have more cognitive problems post-op so ask if he/she could have a regional anesthetic.
It depends on her current health, the surgery and the type of anesthesia. IV sedation/MAC would be the safest and is usually well tolerated by the elderly. Although with a little greater risk, most elderly patients tolerate regional anesthesia as well. General anesthesia stresses all of the body's organs and can be very risky for the elderly. I suggest your mother see her primary care physician who will evaluate her risks involved and optimize her health before the anesthetic.
Hello,
Anesthesia for the elderly as for patients of all ages depends on the he person's underlying health status. If you have any specific concerns I suggest that your surgeon request an anesthesia consultation.
Best wishes to you and your mom.

Without knowing the medical condition of your mother, in general, age unto itself is not a determining factor whether to proceed or not to proceed with anesthesia/surgery
