Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist) Questions Creatinine

Can antibiotics cause a rise in creatinine levels?

My mother has been on antibiotics for a skin infection for 10 days now. Her creatinine levels have all of a sudden increased. Could it be because of the antibiotics?

Yes. Some medications including antibiotics can cause kidney damage and result in an increase in cr. Antibiotics like Bactrim can cause creatinine elevation without kidney injury also. Please repeat renal fn.
Potentially could be AIN, but she needs a complete AKI work-up including urine microscopic evaluation and renal US in addition to lab tests.
Yes, antibiotics can cause the creatinine to go up as an injury to the kidneys or an allergic response.
It could be due to the antibiotics-depends on what one she is taking--or it could be the infection. Please ask her doctor.
