OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) Questions

birth control and iron supplements

I got a blood test done and it showed that I am low on iron. I was told to get an slow release iron supplement over the counter by a pharmacist, but they did not know that I am on birth control. I searched a little to make sure the iron supplement would not effect my birth control, but I got mixed answers. I just want to make sure the iron will not change the effectiveness of my birth control.

Hello and thanks for reaching out!

This is a great question! Iron will not hinder the effectiveness of your birth control pills. In fact, some birth control pills actually have iron to help us to replenish our iron from what’s lost during our periods. So go for it! Slow release iron over the counter is the way to go! (Smile)

As always, for more individualized care and answers, you should always speak with your provider.

Hope all goes well!
