Transplant Surgeon Questions Liver Transplant

Can the body reject a transplant after one year?

My neighbor, who is also a really good friend of mine, underwent a liver transplant and after one and a half years of the transplant the body started rejecting the transplant. Is it possible or could it be some other complication?

Rejection of a liver transplant after one year is less common than within the first year, but still possible. Most of the time is due to unexpected level changes in the immunosuppression medications. Treatment is most of the time straightforward with 2-3 days of hospitalization. Keys for long-term success is to be diligent with hepatology follow-up appointments and medications.
