“Can a chiropractor align your jaw?”
I am a 28 year old female with TMJ disorder. I wonder if a chiropractor can align your jaw?

A chiropractor can adjust any joint in the body. Your chiropractor should take a detailed history and perform a thorough examination before treating, and s/he may recommend that you see a dentist or an orthodontist to supplement the treatment.
It's less about aligning the jaw and more about balancing the muscle tone, movement pattern, and addressing concurrent neck dysfunction that help to create the TMJ disorder.
Absolutely! In fact, many dentists in my area prefer to refer their TMJ/jaw patients over to our office. We obtain an X-ray, run our line analysis software on it to get the perfect measurements, angles, and vectors...then go to work with some light hands-on or instrument assisted adjustments which are TOTALLY comfortable and are usually effective within a short time period!
Yes, they can. Chiropractic is very effective with TMJ syndrome. There will also be a need for chiropractic adjustments to the upper cervical spine because that is where some of the nerve control for the facial muscles originates which affects the TMJ. We get a lot of referrals from dentist with patients that have TMJ.

Yes, they can help with TMJD. Usually the jaw is just tight and possibly swollen at the joint. Occasionally, the jaw is “misaligned” and requires manual adjustment. Chiropractors can address the jaw from the outside and some work on it from the inside as well with subtle pressures. If the alignment is worse, it may require dental appliances like a mouth guard to keep it in place until it heals.

Hello,
There are many factors that complicate answering your question. TMJ has varying degrees of severity and causes, but a chiropractic evaluation is a great place to start.
