Can anesthesia cause pneumonia?

I am a 45 year old male. I want to know can anesthesia cause pneumonia?

While aspiration pneumonia is the most direct cause of anesthesia related pneumonia. Hence the pre-operative requirement of fasting (or NPO nothing to eat by mouth for a duration of 6-8 hours).

Aspiration pneumonia can be a feared complication in general anesthesia if you are full stomach. Also, you could develop bkp after procedure if you have a chronic lung condition or are bedridden, or an incapacitating neurological disease like Parkinson's.
