Cardiologist Questions Statins

Can statin drugs harm your liver?

My dad is taking statins for his high cholesterol, but he also used to drink heavily when he was younger. If his history of alcohol abuse damaged his liver, can taking statins worsen it?

Yes, statins can cause liver injury in anyone, and the risk is higher in patients with pre-existing liver disease from other causes. However, the benefit from taking statins is huge; I would not stop the statin unless and until there is evidence of a problem.
Statins are metabolized thru the liver and statins can cause liver damage. Statins should always be taken with coenzyme Q 10 to help with metabolism.
