Depending on the cause of optic neuritis, some people may get better, but others need treatment to keep their symptoms from getting worse. It is very important to see an ophthalmologist to help determine the right course of treatment and prognosis for your condition.
Unfortunately, yes, optic neuritis can lead to blindness. So monitoring your vision at home and regular exams with your eye physician are important. If you feel your vision has changed immediately go to your doctor. There are medications which treat optic neuritis that your doctor can recommend.
It is really uncommon to go completely blind from optic neuritis. You should be under the care of a specialist who is familiar with optic nerve diseases to ensure that you are properly diagnosed and treated.
