“Can you have GERD with a normal endoscopy?”
I am a 40 year old male. I wonder if you can have GERD with a normal endoscopy?

If you are going by strict definition, GERD means there is some kind of damage to the esophagus (erosions or ulcers) secondary to acid reflux. So if the EGD is normal then we might not call it GERD, but you can still have acid reflux and we would just call this heartburn. In short, you can have acid reflux to explain heartburn or other symptoms even if the EGD is normal. Some GIs call this NERD: nonerosive reflux disease.
