“Can you walk after ankle surgery?”
I am a 44 year old male who needs ankle surgery. I want to know if you can walk after ankle surgery? Or are you bedridden for a certain period of time?

Depends on the extend and type of injury, that determines the type of surgery needed, and surgeon preference. please consult local foot and ankle specialist for realistic expectations.
Usually you are not walking after ankle surgery, usually in a boot or soft cast but can be up and around with a knee scooter, iWalk or crutches. Most ankle surgeries require 4-12 weeks of no weight on that leg depending on the surgery
Depends on the surgery you are having. It can be a small cyst on the ankle or a total fracture. Without specific question it is hard to give and exact answer.
There are multiple conservative options that work very well. Please, make an appointment with me in my Chandler office (480) 269-7130 and I will go over all of your options. Depending on Xrays (if needed) that I can take at my office and the clinical exam, I am able to diagnose and recommend different treatment options. I recommend you have this checked as soon as you can, especially since I can usually treat this without surgery very well in just one visit with me. My office is located on Dobson road, just north of Chandler Regional Hospital. Advanced Foot & Ankle Specialists of Arizona. Feel free to ask to be seen by me specifically and I will get you in the same day or latest the next day. I take all insurances, please do not go off of the insurance list on this website as it is not updated yet. Mention that I have talked to you on the internet. I can also do the entire visit with you over the phone or video call as well, which most insurances cover, even if you are out of state and my staff can verify this for you when you schedule. Thank you and have a good evening.

This is dependent upon the type of ankle surgery. However, a lot of times the surgeon will provide a walking cast boot that will allow for some walking on the surgical side.
In order to get an answer for this question, you need to talk to your surgeon. It depends what type of surgery, the surgeon needs to perform. I would suspect that most ankle surgeries you do need to be on crutches for a period of time.

This depends on the type of surgery. You should not be bedridden but you will not typically be walking in a normal fashion
Hello,
Most times any type of ankle surgery will require you to be non-weight bearing for a period of time.

If surgery is to repair broken bones or injured ligaments/tendons, there is a certain period of non-weight bearing.
It depends on what type of ankle surgery you are having. But, generally, if you are having any kind of boney work done, you need to stay completely off the ankle for 4-8 weeks. If it is a simple arthroscopy, you may be allowed to walk in a walking boot right away or after 2-3 weeks. All of this is dependent on the type of surgery you are having and on your surgeon. You should seek advice directly from your surgeon about his expectations and requirements for his post-surgical care
Usually you would need to remain off the operated ankle for a period of time. This depends on the procedure, and it a discussion best suited with your surgeon
You can but it will be painful and you will mess up the surgical correction. Depending on the surgery you will be required to be off of the foot for up to 8 week or more - no walking or crutches. Depending on what procedures are being done.
This will depend on what procedure or procedures are performed. I recommend you discuss with your surgeon regarding time frames for walking
