covid on yarn

While I was crocheting a little cardigan out of yarn for a friend's new baby, I got covid 19. That was 3 weeks ago. I was worried about giving the cardigan to the child in case it was dangerous/infected. Is this a needless worry and can I still give the gift? Thank you

Hello, if you are in doubt, don't give the gift. According to slightly dated research this virus can last on hard, non-porous surfaces for multiple days. With yarn being a soft tangible item I would say that the virus still has an ability to last up to several days. Even after weeks, if it has seeped deep into the fibers of the yarn giving the gift is risky for the child. Products like Lysol, chlorine and peroxide have the ability to kill many viruses on hard surfaces yet it may ruin something soft like yarn and then even still be harmful to the child. I would crochet a new gift with untainted yarn. If you want to research this further; health.clevelandclinic.org is where I looked. The site verifies that the virus technically needs a human host to survive, so the cardigan may be safe, but if your discernment is telling you its not, then don't. Good luck.
To ease your piece of mind, get it tested. That is doable.
