Crown lengthening is like any surgical procedure, where you should not feel pain during the procedure, if you do, then you will need to inform the doctor that you need more anesthetic. After the crown lengthening procedure, you will experience some soreness for a few days as the area is seeking to heal.
If you compare a tooth extraction to crown lengthening, crown lengthening will be less traumatic to you and the area under treatment.

The dentist performing the procedure should make sure you are completely numb and comfortable before and after the procedure. You should expect some soreness, though, for a couple of weeks during the healing process . Your dentist should be able to advise you on the best medications to alleviate that discomfort.
During the procedure you will be numb, you shouldn’t feel discomfort. Also, crown lenghthening can be done with hard tissue laser which can reduce pain and discomfort and expedite healing.
Crown lengthening is not a painful procedure since the are will be numb under local anesthesia. However, you might experience some discomfort afterwards which is manageable with good oral hygiene care.

Anesthesia will keep you comfortable during the procedure. May have mild discomfort after procedure.
Under proper local anesthesia during the procedure it shouldn't hurt. Depending upon how much tissue is removed to achieve the desired crown length, there is post-op discomfort with or without pain. That should be managed with adequate medication.
