Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Specialist Questions Gestational Diabetes

Does gestational diabetes make me a high risk pregnancy?

I'm in my 6th month of pregnancy and I've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. My doctor says that I might have a premature delivery because of it and might need a C-section to deliver my baby. Does this condition make my pregnancy "high risk"?

yes
Yes, it does make you high risk.
Definitely yes. Might cause premature lung problems of the new born BB. Macrosomia (large BB) at birth 10% of gestational diabetes become later in life diabetic. It is important to be managed well during the pregnancy and know the timing of the delivery.
You are higher risk than someone who doesn't have gestational diabetes, however if you eat a good  diet and take any medication required and your blood sugar is controlled, you will have no problems with your pregnancy. Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone
Gestational diabetes on insulin or oral medications during pregnancy is considered high risk. Baby needs to be monitored with non stress test starting 32 weeks.

As long as the diabetes is well controlled, size of the baby wouldn’t be too big and you wouldn’t need a C-section. Of course there are many other reasons you might need a C-section when you are in labor. Most diabetics deliver near term but pre-term delivery is a risk. Make sure your blood sugars are well controlled with diet and/or medications to minimize the risks.

Take care!
