A few months ago, I had surgery on my jaw after an accident. Now, my gums frequently bleed. Can the two be related? Why are my gums bleeding?

If you had arch bars it is possible. It sounds like you have gingivitis and are in need of a comprehensive periodontal evaluation and cleaning.
