Once the braces are off, the canker sores (Apthous ulcers) should be dramatically reduced. Until then, topical meds - anbesol and orthodontic wax over the sharp spots. If severe, Prednisone (Rx), or dental laser therapy to reduce the sharp discomfort.
Usually your ortho doc will give you a soft wax you can place on your braces to protect your cheeks, lips and tongue. Ask for some.
When braces are placed, patients are told about the importance of keeping braces clean. There are different thoughts about causes of canker sores. Irritation of mouth tissues seems to to be suspect. Using a laser on cankers sores seems to make them heal faster. Keeping your braces clean. Removing food debris and rinsing with 1/2 tsp. salt in a full eight ounce glass of water also helps.
There are multiple choices but the one I think is most effective is to have your dentist or orthodontist place debacterol directly on the canker sores. Typically the cost for treatment ranges from $22-$29. You usually can also take some of the applicators home for the same fee. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon
