Consult PT/OT first.

That really depends upon the type of hand surgery that you are undergoing. If you are having a simple procedure such as a trigger finger release or a carpal tunnel release, then you should be able to perform simple everyday tasks such as getting yourself dressed, eating, etc...the next day. I would suggest that you discuss this with your surgeon.
