Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Questions Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

How is a tumor removed from the jaw?

A tumor was discovered in my grandmother's jaw. I'm wondering: what is the procedure for tumor removal from the jaw? How can a surgeon get into the jaw to remove the tumor?

Depending on the size and location of the tumor, some tumors can be removed from the mouth (intra-oral), while others may need to be approached through the skin (extra-oral). If it is a large tumor, the surgeon may do a biopsy first to determine what type of tumor it is.
It depends on what type of tumor and its size. This might be approached from inside the mouth, or an incision from outside along the jaw line.
Hi,

The tumor, based on size and location, can be approached from the oral cavity or through a small incision in the neck to access the jaw. It is likely also that she may need bone grafting once removed.
