Epidural is performed under local anesthesia and sometimes with minimal light iv sedation if patient is very anxious
In a sterile fashion, an epidural needle is inserted in the back between the vertebrae using local anesthesia while sitting or lying on the side.
Using a special needle, the epidural space is entered by loss of resistance technique. Through this needle a catheter is placed in the epidural space. The needle is removed and the catheter is left in place. Through the catheter anesthetic medication is injected. The anesthetic numbs the desired area and the patient feels minimal to no pain.
Procedure is performed under strict aseptic conditions by anesthesia trained personal.
