It depends on your comorbidities, such as, obesity. Maybe 2-5 days.
It depends on what type of hernia is being fixed. For a standard inguinal hernia, most patients will go home the same day. If it is a large ventral wall hernia that requires a more extensive abdominal wall reconstruction, you could be in the hospital for a few days.
Usually this can be same-day surgery, and overnight stay is sometimes necessary to help control pain or if there’s any issues that need to be observed. This is usually a straight forward procedure and generally the surgical area is treated with local anesthetic that is long lasting and pain is minimized.
Small hernia repairs (whether inguinal, umbilical, or ventral) may be able to go home the same day. Larger repairs depend on how much scar tissue there is from previous surgery and how pain control is. For large abdominal wall reconstructions, patients may stay in the hospital 3-5 days.
