Blood transfusion is given if your hemoglobin is less than 8 g/d (grams per deciliter). Blood transfusion is given for anemia, major surgical operation, accident resulting in significant loss, cancer patients, severe burns, patient with hereditary disorders such as hemophilia, and others. Blood transfusion can take from one to four hours. Thank you.
Roughly 4 hours per unit of red blood cells.

It depends how quickly the iv takes to run, usually about 30-60 minutes. It takes extra time to do the cross-match to make sure he is receiving compatible blood.
