Hello, it all depends of type of flu he has and his immune system. That being said true influenza virus could cause fever anywhere from three to seven days. However, if child is not getting better with high fevers after 3 to 5 days they could have complications of the flu and may require antibiotics so I would recommend for a child to be seen by their Pediatrician.
We prefer fever associates with any viral infection last no longer Than 5 days if the child does not look too sick. Seek doctor’s evaluation if after 5 days or sooner if you feel any discomfort with his overall condition.
Fever usually lasts for 4-6 days (Average 5 days). He should be re-evaluated if the fever lasts more than 5 days or if he has respiratory difficulty to make sure that he does not have complications.
Hi, thank you for your question. Usually, fevers due to a viral infection (like the flu) can last anywhere from one days to about 5 days. If your child looks otherwise well and is up to date with immunizations they should do well. It is important to keep them drinking and hydrated in addition to the fever reducer that you choose to make them feel better. If there is any other concern like vomiting, diarrhea or severe cough or is not improving by the third day it is best that they see their doctor.
Hope this helps and your child feel better soon.
A fever and symptoms from the flu can last 2-7 days, though fevers lasting 4-5 days or more should be re-evaluated for other underlying and potentially more serious infections. You’re pediatrician may obtain further tests and re-examine your child for Ear infections, UTI, Cellulitis, bacteremia, or meningitis or other more rare diseases (Kawasaki Disease, Tick-bourne illnesses, etc...) in the setting of prolonged fever.
