The amount of time taken for treatment for scaling and root planing will depend on the amount of calculus and tartar that is being removed below the gum line. A good hygienist will take their time being thorough and diligent on making sure they removed everything so that you will not need a deep cleaning again as long as you see your dentist the recommended 4 times per year to rid of the bacteria that periodontal disease causes. ADA recommends that you see your dentist 4 times a year (every 90 days) so as to not allow the bacteria to destroy your bone which holds your teeth in securely so that you do not end up losing your teeth from the disease.
Depends on how long it has been since you have had a cleaning and how well you brush and floss. A typical cleaning in my office is an hour.
