Pediatrics | Pediatric Allergy/Immunology Questions Peanut Allergy

How serious are peanut allergies?

My son's allergy test showed that he has a peanut allergy. Does this mean that he can't eat anything that has peanuts in his whole life? How serious are peanut allergies?

Food allergies to any food can be serious. Some food allergies can be life long others can resolve with time. Your son needs to be under the care of an allergist to ensure he is getting constant monitoring of his food allergy. Proper testing at certain intervals can help determine the progression of his allergy and determine if certain interventions such as peanut OIT (oral immunotherapy) can be considered in his case.
They can be severe and life-threatening or milder. On average one in five children can outgrow peanut allergies, but most children do not.
Children with peanut allergies can be desensitized to peanuts and peanut products via several methods. One of the most common methods is called oral immunotherapy which introduces small amounts of peanut protein by mouth daily, with bi-weekly or monthly increases of the dose of the peanut protein.

I strongly encourage you to consider peanut desensitization with your local healthcare specialist, as it can be life-changing
