Surgical Oncologist Questions Lumpectomy

How should I prepare for my lumpectomy?

I'm about to have a lumpectomy to remove a lump located underneath my right breast. Is there anything that I should do to prepare for it? What can I expect from the surgery?

Hopefully the lump has been needle biopsied before it is removed to help the surgeon plan the correct surgery. Stop smoking for two weeks prior. Stop potential bleeding products 4 days before and after making sure you check with your medical doctor. Wash the breast the day before with an antibacterial soap that you are not allergic to. Usually the pain post op is tolerable and can be controlled with extra strength Tylenol.

Best of luck!!!
There is not much preparation needed to remove a breast lump. After surgery that is usually a small amount of pain that is easily managed. You should call your surgeon's office for specific instructions.
It is typically an outpatient surgery. About 30-40 minutes. Small incision with dissolvable sutures. Take it easy at home. Can shower and wear bra next day- make sure it’s okay with you’d surgeon. There will be some discomfort and most surgeons will put you on a narcotic for pain. No prep before hand. Just nothing to eat or drink from midnight the night before. If you take blood pressure or diabetes medications ask your doctor how you should take it before surgery.
There are no specific surgical preparations for a lumpectomy. This is a relatively straight forward procedure. You will want to make certain to keep the area clean and dry after surgery (especially if you have pendulous breasts). You can expect a small incision on the breast (location of the incision is dependent on the location of the cancer). It is not uncommon to have bruising after this type of surgery.

If you have a cancer diagnosis and you choose lumpectomy, radiation therapy may be recommended after surgery depending on the size and type of tumor.
