How to treat hardened arteries?

My general doctor told me that I have hardened arteries and should see someone specialized. What doctor will treat hardened arteries? How is it treated?

Vascular surgeon.
Hello. This depends on where the hardened arteries are. If they are in the heart you should see a cardiologist. If they are anywhere else in your body such as legs, neck, or abdomen you should see a vascular surgeon.
It depends on the location of the hardened arteries and if they are causing symptoms secondary to decreased blood flow downstream to a narrowing or occlusion. If on the heart, a cardiologist would be the right specialist to see but if in the aorta (largest blood vessel in the body) or any of its branches, like arteries in the neck, arms, legs or abdomen, you should see a Vascular Surgeon. As Vascular Surgeons we are trained and capable of offering all possible alternatives including medical therapy, endovascular or open procedures to treat your specific issues. I recommend consulting with a Board-Certified Vascular Surgeon for your vascular problems.
You will need to see a vascular surgeon for an assessment and organising of arterial imaging. He or she will determine the best treatment options for you, being non operative, endovascular or open surgery. Most commonly endovascular methods (angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy) are used first.
