“Can being in the sun without UV protection harm my eyes?”
I often get out in the sun without the proper gear or UV protected sunglasses. Is this likely to harm my eyes in the long-run?

The Ultraviolet rays of light from the sun are believed to be one of the risk factors toward Macular Degeneration and cataracts. Wearing sunglasses which filter out these rays reduces the incidence of these disorders.
Yes it can. It can affect your retina and even speed up the formation of cataracts. Sunglasses are always recommended.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation in sunlight has been linked to early development of cataracts and progression of macular degeneration in those with a genetic predisposition. Typically we advise UV blocking sunglasses.
In the long run, yes. Macular degeneration can be stimulated and worsen with UV exposure. Also, cataracts are inclined to happen more over years of sun exposure. Pterygium, which is degeneration of the conjunctiva, happens with UV exposure. Get good sunglasses with UV a and b wavelength blockage.
This is basic: UV exposure in large quantities is associated with skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma as well as pre-cancer lesions such as actinic keratoses). Therefore, if you have pale skin, you should be even more vigilant: use sun screen, a hat and large sunglasses with UV-A and B filters to protect the eye as well as the peri-ocular skin. The evidence regarding ocular damage is there as well including Salzmans keratopathy, pterygium and exacerbation of dry eyes. Cataracts also seem more prevalent with extreme sun, such as farmers.
Sunlight can create damages at multiple levels. Damage to the eyelids by promoting Basal cell cancer of the eyelids. The exposure of the cornea can create pinguecula on the cornea. The lenses of the eye can form premature cataract. Just to name a few. Always wear sunglasses with UV protection.

Sun is damaging to the eye instructions including: eyelid skin cancers, pterygium, corneal damage from UV exposure, Cataract, retinal damage and macular degeneration. Using sunglasses with 100% UV protection is highly recommended.
