Pediatrician Questions Constipation

Can iron supplements cause constipation in children?

My daughter is 11 years old and I have been giving her iron supplements since she started to feel pretty fatigued at the end of the day (her pediatrician knows). However, she is complaining of constipation. Is it normal?

The amount of iron in most vitamins with iron or single-dose iron is not enough to cause constipation. If this does occur, then a little MiraLAX from time to time should help the problem.
Iron can make the stools darker and sometimes children complain of constipation. Add some fiber to the diet. The benefits of not being anemic out weight the gut issues
Absolutely. Give her some regular stool softner, miralax is okay for kids. ¼ - 1 adult dose daily. Titrate dose to get a bowel movement daily. Ask your pediatrician to be sure he or she is okay with it since they know her history, they may have other suggestions.
