“Is a hip replacement a major operation?”
My 17 year old son will have hip replacement surgery after a football injury. Is a hip replacement a major operation?

Any surgery is a major operation and has stress on the body and causes scar tissue. Hip replacement is a big surgery as the hip joint is very mobile in that its weight bearing and has many degrees of motion in all directions.
There are risks to any procedure, especially in which anesthesia is used. It is not my specialty to determine whether this surgery is major or not. I would make sure to address all questions, risks, benefits, and concerns with your surgeon prior to this operation. Immediate and long term outlook as well
Sir:
Of course that is a major surgery!! Especially on a 17-year-old. My question would be, is it really the only option?? Hip replacements have wear out issues down the road. If all goes well and he does not abuse it, hopefully 30 years? Is a second opinion an option or needed? Remember, one should usually not operate on X-rays here, but rather on symptoms and limitations.
