Audiologist Questions Hearing loss

Is hearing loss hereditary?

If my father suffered hearing loss, will I have the problem too? What are the chances?

Yes hear loss can have a hereditary component. You may be more susceptible to hearing loss, but environmental noise exposure often plays a greater role in hearing loss that occurs later in life. Knowing that your father has developed hearing loss, you would be wise to be proactive in protecting your own hearing whenever you will be exposed to noise. Low cost, easy to use hearing protection is readily available at most drug stores and big box stores.    Angela R. Sieh Ceretto, M.A., CCC-A, FAAA Audiologist Pinnacle Audiology, LLC 6809 S. When it comes to age-related hearing loss, it is estimated that the causes of it are 35-55% genetic. In other words, age-related hearing loss can be hereditary. But not definitively.
