Endocrinology-Diabetes Questions High Blood Sugar glucose

My premature baby has high sugar levels. I am worried. Please help.

My baby who is not 2 months old was a premature baby. He was born in the 8th month and during the checkups, he was detected with high sugar levels. I am extremely worried. I want to know if it is only a temporary situation or will it affect his growth and health in the coming days.

This could be due to the baby's stress; if he or she is getting steroids for lung maturation that could be a reason as well. We may need to wait longer - if baby is not on steroids, then he or she may benefit from a screening for type 1 DM with anti islet cell antibodies and GLUT 4/GAD antibodies also.
Thanks,

May be temporary -- maybe not. See your doctor.
Relax & don't worry. These problems can be corrected. Although diabetes can occur in a newborn it is very unlikely. Transient hyperglycemia of the premature (THP). is common & frequently occurs in the first 4 mo. of life. It usually disappears then & the baby is fine. There were some new guidelines for this published recently. Check with a perinatologist or a neonatologist about this. There are some test that can be done & some treatments recommended. Have them review these new guidelines with you. For now relax & enjoy your baby.
