Orthopedist Questions Hammer toe

I have recently developed hammer toes. Can it be treated?

I have recently developed hammer toes and it is getting painful to walk in certain shoes. My mom has this condition too and her toes are all bent. I don't want to end up like that too. Can this condition be treated early?

Yes but eventually surgery will be necessary. See a reputable Podiatrist.
Absolutely. Depending on the severity of your problem, surgery may be recommended. Appropriate shoe wear is important early on. See your orthopedic surgeon or podiatrist if you have concerns or problems currently.
Yes it can be treated early on with a soft tissue procedure and later on by a fusion procedure
Yes
The best early treatment is making sure that your shoes have adequate space for your toes. Avoid wearing heels or pointed toe shoes to prevent progression of the condition. If it becomes bad, surgical correction is available.
Yes, hammertoes can be treated. The treatment depends on the degree of deformity. There are other deformities that can mimic hammertoes. You were wise to seek advice early. There are orthopedic surgeons who specialize in foot and ankle problems. I would suggest an evaluation.
Treatment for hammer toes without surgery is difficult, and often doesn't work. However, you can try these hammer toe splints: Make sure you wear shoes that allow for plenty of room for the toes!

Hope it helps!

Hello,

It depends on whether or not they are supple (can be stretched out to lay flat, with your hands) or rigid (either not able to do that due to pain or them being in a fixed position). If fixed position, then perhaps only surgery will make them better (but not perfect). There is a genetic component, so you may just develop them (one cannot choose their parents). If still supple, a lot of stretching can help prolong (maybe avoid) the increasing deformity, pain, and need for surgery.

It is genetic and cannot be prevented. Can use corn pads to minimize irritation in the toes but the only way to treat is surgery.
Yes, this condition can be treated early. It would be best to see a foot doctor.
Probably fixable. See an ortho surgeon or podiatrist.
