Is it possible to treat male pattern baldness?

Is there a permanent treatment for male pattern baldness? Does it reoccur even after treatment?

It is absolutely possible to treat male pattern baldness, however, it depends on the extent of baldness. If you have only a small U shaped hair left you are not a candidate for hair transplantation. Otherwise, hair transplantation utilizing follicular unit grafting is the best way to treat male pattern baldness.

Hair loss is a very common and frustrating condition. Thankfully, there are treatment options! There are 2 main treatments for androgenetic alopecia (more commonly referred to as male pattern baldness):

1. Medical treatment may consist of topical treatments such as minoxidil, or an oral pill called finasteride. Both these medications have been well-studied and are shown to be effective, with minimal side effects. Once these medications are discontinued, your hair will start to thin again, and go back to what it was previously before starting therapy.

2. Surgical treatment involves harvesting hair from areas of your scalp that still have hair (usually the back of the scalp), and transplanting them in areas where hair loss has occurred. With time, the newly transplanted hairs will continue to grow. This is a highly effective and permanent solution; graft survival rates are typically greater than 90% when the procedure is performed by skilled surgeons.

To assess what treatment solution is best for you, consult with an experienced hair restoration specialist!

There is no permanent cure for male pattern baldness. Topical agents such as minoxidil and medication such as finasteride may slow or at times regrow some hair. A hair transplant does offer the possibility of repopulating areas of hair loss with new hair that can grow there as it would from where it came from (back of head in areas that will thin over time, but rarely go away completely).
