“What are acupuncture ear seeds?”
I'm 32 years old and suffer from chronic migraines. I heard of acupuncture ear seeds, but I'm really confused about what they are and how they work. Can you explain them to me?

Ear seeds are very small acupressure devices made of differnet metals or a blend of herbs that forms a hard resin seed that can be taped precisely in points of the ear. the practice is called Auricular Therapy.
Auricular (ear) acupuncture is a method of treating the entire body through the ears. It is most effective in treating addiction but can also assist with pain management. Ear seeds are like small stickers with a tiny ball that apply acupressure to points throughout the ear. Whenever your symptoms flare up, you massage these points and it helps to alleviate them. Point selection should be done by an acupuncturist but it's easy to re-apply yourself in between visits (should you need). I do, however, recommend you see an acupuncturist regularly for treatments. Though the seeds may help with the pain itself, the reason why the migraines keep flaring up is likely something they cannot treat alone.
Ear seeds are an alternative to needles for auricular acupuncture. Instead of inserting a needle, a seed (sometimes an actual seed and sometimes a mini ballbearing) is taped to the part of the ear that would be needled.
Auricular (ear) acupuncture is a microcosm-type of acupuncture treatment we do in Chinese medicine. There ear, as a microcosm represents the whole body and points on the ear correlate to other body parts. This is similar to "reflexology" where the foot is the microcosm and massaging different parts of the feet help other body parts. We also have hand, scalp, abdomen and other microcosms we use to represent the whole body, but the ear and feet are the most popular.
By stimulating the area of the ear, it stimulates treatment to the correlating body part. It's best to have this done by a trained professional who can administer the treatment correctly, assess your full needs and be aware of any post-treatment cautions, etc.
If interested in using this, go find a Licensed Acupuncturist in your area - be sure they are an L.Ac., not a chiropractor or physical therapist who had little training - go to someone who has full training.
Good luck.

Ear seeds are just little pellets that are stuck onto acupuncture points in the ear with little pieces of adhesive tape. You can press on them to stimulate the point.
As to how they work, it's the same as how any other acupuncture point works. Each point has a function(s), and stimulating them with a needle or a seed activates that function to cause the body to heal itself. They are very effective.
I would suggest you see an acupuncturist for your migraines. There are lots of ways to treat them.

The ears are an important part of the body and is treated as a microsystem; they are connected with the internal organs. Using the ear seeds stimulate neurotransmitters that relax and reduce pain. Applying the ear seeds on the ears for 2 to 4 days can help alleviates headaches, anxiety, depression, fatigue, and including migraines.
The ear seeds are made up of tiny black balls taped onto a small tape. They are specifically positioned on specific points in the war. The ear is a micro system of the human body, in the upside down fetal position. It is a direct link towards the brain and can help with chronic migraines along with herbal formulas.
Acupuncture seeds are small seeds or could be made out of beads( roughly 3 mm in size) that are placed on the ear at designated points depending on the condition. This is what we call auricular acupressure, which can be used to treat the entire body. Your practitioner will tell you how often to press on them, which gives stimulation to the designated acupuncture point for your condition, but in the form of acupressure. They are used to stimulate the acupuncture point in the ear where it is placed for your condition throughout the day when you're not able to get treatment.
There is a type of acupuncture practices called auricular acupuncture. It treats problems on the ears only. It can be combined with body acupuncture. Sometimes, we tape special little balls (can be magnet material) sized as seeds on the surface of ears. We call it ear seeds. We usually leave them on the ears for 3-4 day and suggest you pressuring on them periodically. It is also called acupuncture pressure with ear seeds. Ear seeds work very well with emotional issues and acute pain. Patients can take a shower or shampoo hair without any problem. By the end of 3-4 days, the patient will remove them and throw away. I have never heard that seed falls into an ear.
Unlike the western conception of it, acupuncture is actually composed of multiple different systems. One of those systems is referred to as auricular or ear acupuncture. In this system, the entire body is mapped on to the ear and points on the ear alone can be used to treat issues in the entire body.
There are a few ways we utilize ear points: very small needles, tacks and seeds. The needles we use in the ear are quite small and are inserted and removed during the course of your office visit - in other words, you don't typically leave the office with any needles still in your ear.
Tacks are also very small. They're inserted in the office but, unlike most needles, you wear them home and can leave them in for a few days.
Then we have seeds. These are exactly what they sound like: it's a seed from a plant in the Vaccaria family (cow herb or prairie carnation). The seed is stuck on a small band-aid like square of adhesive and is applied to points on the ear. Similar to tacks, patients can wear the seeds for a few days before removing them. They can be very effective for pain patients because the seed can be squeezed to relieve a pain flare up. Unlike tacks or needles, seeds are non-invasive - they do not break the skin, they simply apply pressure to a point in the ear.
