There are no long term side effects of birth control pills provided the woman is not at risk for blood clots, heart attack or stroke. This includes women who are older than 35 and smoke. There are many benefits including decreased risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, more controlled and less painful menstrual periods, and decreased pain from endometriosis.
