The term “collapsed lung” is a layman’s term use for the medical term of Pneumothorax, which is the loss of air from the lung tissue in to the chest cavity, this causes the lung to deflate.
The causes are external, due to trauma, the penetration of any foreign object, or from a broken rib, which injures the lung can cause a pneumothorax, also lung lesions, like the bullae, hole like loss of lung tissue structure, commonly seen in Emphysema, can spontaneously or by high pressure maneuvers like sneezing or coughing, rupture and create a leak and loss of air from the lung and pneumothorax.
