Coughing is the way in which your body clears your airway of potentially harmful or obstructing substances. It is lifesaving and the ability to cough is a key neurologic function called "protecting your airway" -- it is essential to good health. As with all things, the reason WHY your child coughs during the night is key. If s/he has allergies or an upper respiratory infection that's causing mucus and phlegm in the back of the nose and throat, s/he will cough to expel those secretions. If your child has asthma, nighttime coughing is a sign that the asthma is not well controlled. Sometimes inappropriate coughing can be a nervous tic or other type of abnormal reflex.
