“What causes spine pain in children? ”
My son has been complaining about pain in his spine for the past few days. I don't know if it's serious though. He was checked for scoliosis recently and he was fine. What could be causing this pain? He's 13.

School, stress, heavy backpack, sitting badly, playing video games, athletics, etc. Yes kids can absolutely have pain in their back and just like with adults it can be several contributing factors. Getting him to a pediatric chiropractor can help to rule out any underlying conditions and get him to feeling better, have more energy, sleep better, have more focus, etc.
We are certified as chiropractic pediatricians and would check your child's spine for nerve root irritation and subluxation.
Pain in kids is never normal, he needs a good work up, if persistent advanced imaging which could be ultrasound diagnostic, a CT, an MR or XR, it sounds like he already had scoliosis check that is usually an XR, so if pain continues push for more until you figure out cause.
So many possibilities can cause back pain in children. If it's only been the past few days I would suggest looking at an activity that he's done recently that may be the cause of it. Many times its something like jumping on a trampoline that will cause the back to hurt. Also looking at his posture. Poor posture while seated at a desk most the day causes much of the pain he may be experiencing. Great news not having a scoliosis curvature, I'm assuming that the x-ray was done to confirm this, if it wasn't and they just saw on physical exam no findings of scoliosis, I would suggest getting the xray anyway. Check to make sure there were no recent rashes, it's that tick time of year. Getting checked by a chiropractor and being adjusted to restore motion to the fixated joints more times then not relieves the irritation causing the pain he is experiencing.
Spine pain in a child could be caused from a simple bone bruise to something more serious. If it persists for more than a week, it should be carefully examined by X-ray and possibly MRI to rule out any number of conditions. More often, it’s a bruise from a fall or localized trauma. Make sure to have it examined by a qualified doctor, orthopedic specialist, or chiropractor if it continues to bother him.
Hello, this is Dr. Eric Miller.
It may be something as simple as a strained muscle or a slight misalignment in the spine. Kinks happen. If it has been for 3 days, hopefully it is starting to feel better. If not, make an
appointment with a local chiropractor with good reviews to have an examination and determine the actual cause of the pain. The pain should be easy to reproduce by finding the tender spot. It will most likely be a muscle or a joint. Once diagnosed, treat it with some manipulation, stretching and muscle work. That should do the trick. In the meantime, try ice and ibuprofen. If ice is not helpful, switch to heat. Also, try to stretch the affected area. I hope this info is helpful.
